Benn Targets Eubank Jr Rematch at Tottenham Stadium
Conor Benn is determined to avenge his recent loss to Chris Eubank Jr, with September 27 being targeted for a highly anticipated rematch at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The first bout, which took place last month at the same venue, ended in a thrilling 12-round decision win for Eubank Jr. Now, Benn’s promoter Eddie Hearn says both sides are already locked in for a two-fight deal and are eager to run it back.
“I know September 27, back at Spurs, is a date that [Saudi financier] Turki Alalshikh has put forward and proposed. We're ready, really. We signed the contract for two fights,” Hearn told Sky Sports.
“Conor's just desperate to run it back. He feels like he's going to improve a lot going into that fight. [It was] his first fight in 14, 15 months, at 160lbs.”
Hearn praised both fighters for delivering an unforgettable night and reiterated their commitment to a second showdown.
Return to Welterweight Still on the Table for Benn
While Benn is focused on securing the Eubank rematch at middleweight, Hearn also confirmed that a return to the welterweight division remains an option.
That path, however, could be complicated by the surprise comeback of 46-year-old boxing legend Manny Pacquiao, who is reportedly set to return to challenge WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios.
Hearn Blasts Pacquiao’s Title Shot: “Absolute Madness”
Eddie Hearn did not hold back in criticizing Pacquiao’s sudden reentry into title contention, calling the situation a disservice to the integrity of championship boxing.
“Absolute madness. If you're ever talking about something to suit a belt, this is it. How can you let a guy who hasn't boxed for five years [do that]?” Hearn said.
He also referenced earlier talks that once involved Pacquiao facing Benn.
“Probably about three years ago they approached us about a Conor Benn fight. I said we'd been approached about a Manny Pacquiao fight for Conor Benn — I got absolutely ridiculed,” Hearn added.
“Now fast forward another three years, you've just put this guy in the rankings out of nowhere and now he's going to fight for a world title. Dare I say it, it's like exhibition stuff but for real world championships. For me it makes no sense.”
Could a Benn vs Pacquiao Fight Happen?
Despite his strong words, Hearn left the door slightly open to a future Benn vs Pacquiao fight — but only if the Filipino legend manages the unthinkable.
“If he all of a sudden came back and had a win against a world-class opponent, does that change things? Maybe,” Hearn said.
Still, he warned of the risks.
“He's not going to beat Mario Barrios and two, he shouldn't even be in the ring. This is a dangerous game and when you reach that age, especially against someone who's as young and dangerous and fresh as Conor Benn, it's just a bad idea.”
“The guy's got more money than you could imagine. Just go and enjoy yourself.”
