Matheus Cunha to Manchester United: £62.5m Deal Set as Rashford Exit Looms
Manchester United are set to make a major splash in the transfer market by triggering Matheus Cunha’s £62.5 million release clause, NeverEnding Sports understands. The Red Devils are expected to formally approach Wolverhampton Wanderers next week to complete the deal.
The 25-year-old Brazilian forward has agreed to a five-year contract and is expected to don the prestigious No.10 shirt—a number currently worn by Marcus Rashford. Rashford, who spent the second half of the season on loan at Aston Villa, is now likely on his way out of Old Trafford.
Cunha’s Standout Season at Wolves
Cunha arrives off the back of his most prolific league campaign to date. Operating largely as an attacking midfielder under Gary O'Neil and later Vitor Pereira, he netted 15 goals and provided six assists in 33 Premier League appearances.
That goal tally marks a personal best for Cunha, underlining his growth and maturity in the English top flight.
On-Field Controversies
Despite his stellar performances, Cunha's 2024/25 season was not without incident. He received a four-match suspension and a £50,000 fine for headbutting and kicking Milos Kerkez following Wolves’ FA Cup loss to Bournemouth.
Another controversy followed in December during Wolves’ 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town at Molineux. Cunha was charged with misconduct after elbowing an Ipswich staff member and knocking off his glasses. The FA issued a two-match ban and an £80,000 fine.
A longer suspension and a £120,000 fine were initially considered, but were reduced after Cunha accepted the charge, issued a sincere apology, and offered to replace the staff member’s glasses. His previously clean disciplinary record also worked in his favour.
Transfer Saga Ends with United Victory
Earlier in the season, the Brazilian was linked with Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, and Arsenal. Newcastle had reportedly opened talks with Cunha’s representatives, but United have now won the transfer battle.
Interestingly, Cunha signed a new four-year contract with Wolves in February, temporarily cooling speculation. However, the lure of Old Trafford has proven too strong to resist.
What Awaits Cunha at Old Trafford?
Cunha joins a Manchester United side in transition. The Red Devils endured a dismal 2024/25 campaign, finishing 15th in the Premier League and missing out on European football for the first time since 2014/15.
They also fell short in the Europa League final, losing to Tottenham Hotspur—a defeat that cost them a spot in next season’s Champions League.
With Rashford's exit looming and United rebuilding, Cunha’s arrival signals a fresh start in the post-Europe era at Old Trafford.
